New electricity connections and capacity changes for businesses

Who do we speak to when a site needs a new connection or more electrical capacity?

A supplier sells electricity, while the local distribution network operator manages the regional network and connection process. A new building, major load, solar array, battery, heat pump or EV charging scheme may require a new or modified connection. Establish present capacity, proposed import and export requirements, programme and responsibility before treating an equipment quotation as deliverable.

Define what is changing

Record the site's existing connection and agreed capacity, the proposed equipment, maximum import and export, operating pattern and required completion date. A project can affect both how much electricity the site draws and how much it may send to the network.

Clarify the parties and dependencies

The network operator assesses network connection requirements. The supplier, meter operator, installer, designer, landlord and independent connection provider may each have separate roles.

  • Existing MPAN and connection capacity
  • New maximum import requirement
  • Generation or battery export requirement
  • Application route and technical standard
  • Network reinforcement and quotation assumptions
  • Metering, protection and commissioning scope
  • Property, planning and landlord consents

Treat capacity as a programme risk

Do not assume a connection application, reinforcement or export permission is included merely because an installer has priced equipment. Record application status, conditions, costs, expiry dates and the party accountable for each action.
