Commercial solar and batteries

When does battery storage make sense for a business?

Would a battery reduce our business energy costs?

A battery moves electricity between times; it does not create energy. Its value may come from increasing use of on-site generation, changing import timing, managing peaks, supporting resilience or participating in flexibility arrangements. Each value stream has different technical, contractual and operational requirements and should be evidenced separately.

Start with the load and tariff

Use interval data to understand import, export and peaks. Then define which price difference, avoided charge or operational need the battery is expected to address. An annual bill total is not enough to size a system.

Keep value streams distinct

Solar self-consumption, tariff shifting, peak management, backup capability and external flexibility revenues should not be added together unless the operating strategy can actually deliver them together.

  • Usable power and energy capacity
  • Round-trip losses and degradation
  • Cycle and warranty limits
  • Connection and export constraints
  • Control-system and metering requirements
  • Fire, access, insurance and emergency planning
  • Who bears changing market-revenue risk?

Test operational ownership

Confirm who monitors the asset, controls dispatch, responds to faults and optimises it as tariffs and site demand change. A modelled first-year saving is not a substitute for a whole-life operating plan.
