Bill explainer

What are the parts of a commercial energy bill?

A bill mixes supply identifiers, measured use, contracted rates and other charges. Work through those layers before deciding whether a total looks right.

Look for: MPAN for electricity or MPRN for gas

Why it matters: This links the invoice to the supply point. A physical meter can change while the supply identifier remains.

Before comparing bills

  • Use the same billing period.
  • Separate electricity and gas.
  • Match each invoice to its MPAN or MPRN and site.
  • Mark actual and estimated readings.
  • Keep contract schedules beside the invoice.
