Commercial solar and batteries

Rooftop, ground-mounted and solar car-park systems compared

Where could a commercial solar system be installed on our estate?

Rooftop, ground-mounted and car-park solar can use different parts of an estate, but each creates distinct structural, planning, access, drainage, security and operational questions. The best location is not simply the largest visible area: it must work with the site's demand, property rights, network connection and long-term plans.

Rooftop solar uses an existing asset

It can place generation close to the site's demand without consuming operational land. The survey should consider structure, roof condition, coverings, warranties, access, fire strategy, shading, drainage and planned replacement dates.

Ground and car-park systems create different interfaces

Ground-mounted solar may offer scale but can affect land use, ecology, access and planning. Solar canopies can combine generation with parking and EV infrastructure but add foundations, vehicle-clearance, lighting, drainage and construction-phasing questions.

  • Who owns and controls the roof, land or car park?
  • How long will the organisation occupy the site?
  • What area must remain available for operations or development?
  • Where will cables, inverters and switchgear go?
  • What planning and property consents are required?
  • How does generation align with site demand?
  • What connection and export position is assumed?

Compare deliverable schemes, not panel counts

Ask each proposer to define the surveyed area, exclusions, consent assumptions, connection status, construction impact, expected generation and whole-life responsibilities on the same basis.
